Good Advice Matters is asking supporters to set up a standing order for £1 per month. Your support will mean that anyone facing problems as a result of a decision relating to benefits can get free, easy access to an experienced welfare benefit adviser. In the current climate of cuts and changes to the benefit system the demand for specialist advice and help has never been greater. Cuts in funding to traditional advice agencies has meant that people are struggling to get the help and support that they desperately need. Just £1 per month will help ensure that vulnerable people are just an email away from reaching an experienced adviser.

Good Advice Matters is now a registered charity! This is really good news for us and marks an important mile stone in our development. It has taken us roughly twelve months of hard work but as a registered charity we feel more confident about our future.

Our Advisers

We now have three advisers! We thought it might be nice if the advisers weren’t completely anonymous so here is a bit of information about us all;

We have been so busy advising people directly that we haven’t had time to write articles etc for our website and we think it’s looking a bit neglected. So the advisers at Good Advice Matters have decided to write a monthly newsletter. The aim of the newsletter is to give you more information about us and to highlight one particular issue or recurring problem that lots of people are contacting us about.

Brussels, 29 September 2011 – EU nationals who habitually reside in the UK are subject to the so-called ‘right to reside’ test to qualify for certain social security benefits. As this test indirectly discriminates non-UK nationals coming from other EU Member States it contravenes EU law. This is why the European Commission has requested the United Kingdom to stop its application. The request takes the form of a “reasoned opinion” under EU infringement procedure. The UK has two months to inform the Commission of measures it has taken to bring its legislation into line with EU law. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to refer the UK to the EU’s Court of Justice.

Employment and Support Allowance is undoubtedly the benefit of the year in respect to its popularity. We have already published some guides on completing the forms, attending medicals and appealing against unfavourable decisions. Thank you for the pleasant feedback and we are very pleased to hear that it is helpful.  The subject we have not really touched yet is what to do if your case ends up at a tribunal and you lose.  These things happen for various reasons and this short post is for those who have had such an experience or fear that this may happen to them.
